(三)A brief introduction to Guizhou Province

g. Chishui Scenic Area

This scenic area is a fantastic world of waterfalls and is famous for Shizhangdong Waterfall, Sidonggou Waterfalls, and Zhongdong Waterfall. The scenic area has typical red rock landforms with rosy red rock cliffs, red rock pinnacles, huge red rock grottoes and beautiful red rock gorges. There is a national tree fern nature reserve and a bamboo forest national park. The major sight of historical interest is the Monument of Red Army apart from many cultural relics in the area.

h. Malinghe River Gorge Scenic Area

Situated in Xingyi of west Guizhou Province,? the scenic area is divided into three sections—the Malinghe Gorges, the Wangfeng Stone Forest, and the Wangfeng Lake. The Malinghe Gorges are located in the northeastern part of the scenic area. The Malinghe River is a tributary of the Nanpanjiang River and runs through the gorges. Along the river, scenic spots include the Chelang Hot Spring, the Tianxing Gallery (a deep rocky valley) and the Zhaojiadu ferry crossing. The winding river roars through the gorges and is a perfect place for whitewater rafting.

⑵Six National Nature Reserves

a. Fanjingshan(Mountains) Nature Reserve

Straddling the border between Yingjiang and Jiangkou counties of Tongren Prefecture, the reserve is one of the six in the Man and Biosphere Programme of UNESCO. The reserve has protected a fine ecological environment and dense virgin forests of the Fanjingshan Mountains. There are more than 10 rare tree species such as dove trees, Bretschneidera? sinensis, Tsuga chinesis, and Liriodendron chinense all under State protection. The Fanjingshan Mountains are also a paradise for many rare animals such as the State-protected Guizhou golden monkeys, serows and crimson-bellied tragopans. The reserve features a beautiful landscape. Along a path with more than 8,000 stone steps, visitors can reach the summit-Jinding. There are many rock for mations with unique shapes around the summit, such as the “Book Rock”, “Mushroom Rock”, “Eagle Rock”, and “Prince Rock”. There are many stone pinnacles, columns and cliffs as well.

b.Maolan Karst Forest Nature Reserve

Located in Libo of south Guizhou Province, the reserve is covered by a lush virgin forest. The stable ecological system helps development of a rich biological resource. There are more than 2,000 flora and fauna species found in the reserve and these include some 40 newly discovered plant species. The reserve features the perfect blend of Karst scenery and lush green forest. It is the only forest of its kind on the same latitude in the world. It is valuable to geographic and biological researches.

c.Caohai Nature Reserve

Known as the “pearl of plateau”, Caohai Lake is the province’s largest freshwater lake. Situated in Weining Yi and Hui Autonomous County of Bijie Prefecture, it is 2,171.7 meters above sea level and covers an area of more than 3,000 hectares. Surrounded by green mountains and dense woodland, the lake has plenty of water and lush grass. It teems with fish, prawns and some special weeds. It provides sanctuary to more than 100 species of rare birds. It is the winter habitat for migrating black-necked cranes which means winter is the best season to meet these feathered friends on the lake.

d. Chishui Nature Reserve

Situated in Chishui City of Zunyi, the reserve is the country’s first national reserve designed for the protection of rare tree ferns and their unique living environment. The trees thrive in the reserve and there are more than 40,000 tree ferns in the reserve. Densely distributed, they have given many areas of the reserve a lush appeal, which is rare in many other parts of the county. As a result, the reserve is acclaimed as “the kingdom of the tree fern”. Thanks to the well-preserved plants and distinctive ecological system featuring many characteristics of tropical forest in South Asia, experts with the Chinese Academy of Sciences have dubbed it the enclave of South Asia. It is a perfect educational and research base for palaeontology, geography, climatology and environmental sciences. It is also a perfect tour destination.

e. Xishui Nature Reserve

Located in Xishui County of Zunyi, this remote reserve covers an area of 48,666 hectares and has a large, well-preserved subtropical evergreen broadleaved forest. Woods cover more than 89.6 per cent of its area. With rich diversity of flora and fauna, the reserve is home to many newly recorded species in the county.

f. Leigongshan Mountain Nature Reserve

Stretching between Leishan, Taijiang, Jianhe and Rongjiang counties of southeast Guizhou Province, the Leigongshan Mountain has an elevation of 2,200 meters above sea level. With a total area of 47,300 hectares, the reserve conserves the subtropical evergreen broadleaved forest rarely found in areas on the same latitude, a rich diversity of flora and fauna and a complete ecological system. More than 2,000 species have been found in the reserve, in which large communities of the State-protected Flous Taiwania trees are very famous.
